The official announcement describes the new film as a “fresh take” on the book, rather than being too close to the first film directed by Mary Harron. There’s not much to say about that either – trying to outdo Beber is a fool’s errand. Given Luca Guadagnino’s penchant for visual splendor (please call me by your name, challenger) and crazy horror (sigh, bones and all), we can expect something closely tied to the surreal nature of the book, as well as offering a new, Lucca-esque take on the finance bros that Harlan’s film embodies so well.
So: Who would Guadagnino choose to play his version of the bloodthirsty financier? The field is vast. Not only does our current leading man clearly aspire to play the weirdo (more on that below), but the physical demands of the role are also pretty loose. Bell-style beefcake is just as reasonable as the more elfin cast.
Although in the original film, Bateman’s WASP whiteness was an integral part of his dark character, Guadagnino could have immersed himself in the modern, multicultural world of finance and cast actors of color. Here are the top contenders; hopefully their business cards are up to par.
