Some fashion girls say they have Audrey Hepburn dresses My Fair Lady on their mood board. Others included Kaia Gerber, who was able to wear rare vintage Givenchy couture pieces that referenced the timeless fashion icon’s equally monumental 1964 film costumes.

Kaia Gerber wore a dress to attend the Academy Museum Benefit Gala on October 19. This is a fund-raising event for the museum and is considered the “West Coast Met Gala”. Fashion It’s a “homage to old Hollywood.” A beaded cap-sleeve dress with a translucent skirt, designed by Alexander McQueen in 1997 when he was creative director of Givenchy. McQueen’s collection for Givenchy incorporated and reimagined visual references from women around the world. Among them was Hepburn, who often wore Givenchy dresses and two of the gowns were inspired by her My Fair Lady Wardrobe. One is white, identical to the on-screen version; the other is the black gown Gerber picked for the Academy Museum Gala. (Ironically, the screen version is one of Hepburn’s most famous works no Givenchy. It’s the work of Cecil Beaton, who won an Academy Award for his costume design in the film.

in red carpet interview FashionGerber said Audrey Hepburn “has always” been a major source of fashion inspiration. As for her collegiate ball gown, “I love that it’s a dark gothic version of the classic Lee McQueen My Fair Lady Clothes,” she added.

Gerber’s 2024 style eschews the tiny crowns and updos of Hepburn and her 1997 Givenchy collection. Instead, the model wore her hair parted in the middle and her bangs were gently curled to frame her face. Givenchy bags and shoes, De Beers diamond rings, and exquisite earrings and chokers from RW Fine Jewelry completed her elegant, ancient-meets-modern look.

Kaia Gerber’s vintage Givenchy couture is also her way of paying homage to the brand’s future. Earlier this year, the brand appointed former Alexander McQueen creative director Sarah Burton to its top design position.

Gerber told Fashion Going to the Academy Gala with Burton felt like “a great way to celebrate the time Lee and Sarah spent at Givenchy in the late ’90s.” And it was a way for the now self-styled Gerber to showcase her fashion knowledge.
