After a delicious and hearty meal, my body is almost desperate for digestive juices. While my former chef loves Fernet’s classic shots, the holidays call for something a little more special. Amaro AvernaStarting at $35
A few years ago, when my dad was visiting me in college, we would go to Boston’s North End for dinner and stop somewhere for espresso and amaro. It feels very special, very mature, even a bit European. These complex, bitter, herbal sips offer such a wide range of experiences to end the meal. My current goal is averna– She’s sweet, which is enough for me – with a hint of bitterness and citrus. Usually I drink it over ice with orange flavor, but sometimes with sparkling water, olives, and lemon flavor. It’s a treat that I can slowly savor on the couch in my comfy pants. —Mallary Santucci, Culinary Producer
Fusav Blake NosinoStarting at $30
I’m a great cook but a terrible bartender. My dinner featured wine but ended with a unique spirit that could be enjoyed on its own or mixed with coffee. To that end, Nocino from Brooklyn’s Forthave is a stunning finish. This Brooklyn-based distillery’s walnut liqueur is made with locally harvested black walnuts and lightly sweetened with wildflower honey from upstate New York. The flavors of candied nuts and warm baking spices really bring it to the table. Sitting with family and friends for a few hours after a meal is that full feeling I crave every holiday. —Ali Inglese, senior director of content production
