Ferulic acid is a powerful antioxidant found naturally in the cell walls of plants such as oats, rice bran and apples. While it works well on its own to neutralize harmful free radicals (e.g., unstable molecules emitted from air pollutants and cigarette smoke) and reduce signs of aging, it’s often combined with other antioxidants (e.g., vitamin C and nicotinamide) used to maximize their impact. “Ferulic acid helps stabilize vitamin C, making it more effective and longer-lasting,” explains Anand. “In fact, the benefits of vitamin C—brightening skin, reducing hyperpigmentation, and aiding collagen production—are significantly enhanced when combined with vitamin E and ferulic acid.”
