When it comes to our butts, we want them to be as pristine as possible, right? A major part of this is how we wipe and what we choose to wipe with.
Big Toilet Paper wants us to believe we need the softest toilet paper ever – so it feels like we’re cleaning with a cloud – but that could lead to the dreaded Dingleberry (as in those ridiculous Pinpoint Toilet Paper Bears every time There is a chance to remind us of that) get). But TP was so thin—like the slim, marshmallow-like half-layer material available in our office bathrooms—that it simply didn’t get the job done.
So, which toilet paper is best for our precious butts, and how do we clean them?
That’s Us – Raj Punjabi and Noah Michelson, hosts of HuffPost’s “Am I Doing Something Wrong?” Podcast – Here’s what Dr. Evan Goldstein, butt expert and Butt Whisperer, asked when he came into our studio recently to talk about how to keep your butt healthy.

“This is a multifactorial issue,” Goldstein said. Nationally renowned anal surgeon and author “Take Your Butt Seriously: The Definitive Guide to Anal Health, Pleasure, and Everything in Between” Tell us. “There are a lot of guys with different textures and consistencies in their holes.”
Basically, our butts are like snowflakes: each one is unique, and their needs depend on many different factors, from our gender to our age.
People who take estrogen or spironolactone (two hormonal treatments commonly taken by cisgender women, transgender women, and others) may need to take special care of their buttocks. “The skin gets super thin and fragile,” says Goldstein, so that may make “Easy” TP a better choice.
Others, he explains, have thicker skin in that area, so “it can withstand any toilet paper you buy — even scratchier stuff.”
“Some people bring their own toilet paper to work or keep it in their locker. You have to figure out what works,” he said.
But more important than the quality of TP is how you use it—the biggest mistake people make, Goldstein says, is how they wipe it.
“We have to get rid of ‘wiping.’ It should be patting. Like a dab,” Goldstein said, reiterating that we shouldn’t create a lot of friction to keep ourselves clean. Wiping too often or too hard can make our butts worse.
“It goes back to the gut versus the butt issue,” Goldstein said. If you’re getting enough fiber and staying hydrated, “you really don’t need to wipe,” he says.
Although “mush” can happen, Goldstein suggests we still shouldn’t use force wiping to deal with its aftermath, no matter how necessary it may seem. “The more you do it, the angrier and angrier you get. [your butt] Got it,” he added.
Instead, he recommends using a bidet or shower if possible, which can completely clean the area without irritating it. Remember, your booty always deserves a good drying after a splash.
“You don’t want moisture in the space,” Goldstein said.
Another huge mistake? Using wet wipes, Goldstein originally discussed with us during last year An episode about poop.
“They’re terrible — not just for the environment, but for your hole,” he said. “There are a lot of companies throwing out wipes and I think they should all be banned. I see 90 people a week [in my surgical office]I would say a third of people come in because of problems caused by wet wipes.
That’s because, unlike toilet paper, a bidet, or a post-poo shower, wet wipes affect our skin’s microbiome.
“Think about it — we have good bacteria and we have bad bacteria, but they’re in homeostasis. They’re in balance. Wet wipes are fucked in a really bad way,” Goldstein said. “I saw ridiculous dermatitis [in my patients],…bacterial infection. … Now you’ve messed up the microbiome and it’s causing a lot of problems.
