Hippocrates said, “Let food be your medicine.” As far as tonight’s election is concerned, we can only assume Dr. H will be ordering a generous portion of comfort food. No one can predict what will happen to us in the next few days, but what yes What’s certain is that as we wait for the election results to come in, anxiety, nervousness and curiosity will be running high – hence the need for some truly satisfying comfort food.

While macaroni and cheese or anything involving potatoes is fine, we asked chefs Marcus Samuelsson and Melissa King how they create their own cozy election night menu. For Samuelson, chef and owner of Hav & Mar, Metropolis and Red Rooster Harlem in New York, it’s pizza, but of course, he’s not making a traditional Neapolitan pie. Instead, he’s making Doro Wat pizza, which puts an Ethiopian twist on an Italian classic. Meanwhile, Kim is exploring the warming and restorative potential of shrimp and pork wonton soup.

    Both recipes are below.

“I plan to make dumplings with my friends on Election Day,” Kim said. “As a Cantonese-American, Hong Kong-style shrimp and pork wontons remind me of my family and where we’re from. In the San Gabriel Valley, my grandma, mom, and sister and I would make hundreds of wontons around the table. I have great memories of it being a tradition that brought us together and a comfort dish that brought me great comfort.
