I know this might seem like a hacker fashion joke to a guy Fashion Writers often dream about a pair of shoes (specifically: Christian Louboutin Kate 100 Red and Black Ombre Patent Tie-Dye Print Pumps), but allow me to provide some important background: I’m a culture writer who spends about 70% of her time working from home. Watching rom-coms in dirty pajamas and not wearing heels that often since bar mitzvah season. In fact, I recently sold the first pair of non-Croc shoes I bought in almost a year (blue Camper Kobarah sandals, in case you’re curious) because I found that even the objectively comfortable soles were “too pointy.” In other words, I’m not necessarily a typical Louboutin customer; So why did this shoe seep into my subconscious?
I can’t remember where I first saw these shoes, which makes me think it might have been while perusing TheRealReal in a fugue state, but they keep appearing in my dreams in strange ways— I was buying them and I couldn’t find them, I bought them but they didn’t fit and I missed the return window, fear! When I’m awake, I’m particularly eager to wear these shoes with the scarlet Selkie dress I recently bought for my stepsister’s upcoming winter black-tie wedding, but when I’m asleep, the Louboutins bother me the same way I do The items worn are different.
I love clothes and accessories as much as the next person, but I usually don’t even remember my dreams (except for one very memorable dream a few years ago where I was riding a seal in the waters near Malibu, but I digress), Not to mention the repetitive look of finding them studded with a specific pair of designer heels. Is my subconscious telling me to grow up, put away the plastic shoes and start rocking low, scary heels, or is there some other alchemical twist of fate going on that makes these Loubies the most important thing in my mind? As an experienced and respected journalist, I knew exactly what I had to do: Google.
According to the online resource “Dream Interpretation Dictionary”, dreaming about shoes is said to indicate “big things are about to happen, sometimes new beginnings, sometimes setbacks” and also symbolizes “progress, down-to-earth, stability, work and career, responsibility, Spirituality, and predicting the future. It’s a lot of things, and not all of them are relevant to my specific life, but if those stiletto scarlet heels stomping around in my dreams really herald a new beginning, maybe it’s for the best. The thing is to simply head into the unknown and…buy shoes? (This isn’t my first shoe-related rationalization, but it might actually be my magnum opus.)
