Currently, the United States ranks 55th on the World Press Freedom Index. This is a low score that has been declining for years, due to a variety of factors: widespread media layoffs, the decline of local journalism, the prevalence of online harassment against female and minority journalists, the lack of legislation to protect journalists, the demonization of journalists, etc. wait. There is much work to be done to continue to uphold the First Amendment to its fullest extent, and the next president has an opportunity to strengthen protections or make the news situation worse.
