For the September issue QI wrote about the debate raging in the watch world between micro and oversized watches. Over the past few years, the tug-of-war has clearly shifted towards smaller pieces, although there are those who refuse to keep their epic 45mm watches out. But the beasts got another serious hit this weekend at the annual Academy Museum Gala, with Paul Mescal and Dwyane Wade showing up with some choice exposed weapons. Wade is wearing a Tiffany & Co. Eternity watch, a 28mm women’s watch smaller than a $5 coin, and an October watch Q Cover Star Mescal Select this A small watch for 2024, a small version of the Cartier Tank.
While watches have been getting smaller, with some adventurous dressers like Timothée Chamalet and Bad Bunny also starting to wear women’s watches, it has now fully entered the mainstream. Let’s explain this in Pokémon terms, since that’s what we’re all familiar with, right? You give your trend a Paul Mescal Stone. What? Your trend is evolving! The scaled-down Tank replicates the larger Tank in every aspect, offering all of Cartier’s signature details in a smaller package. a lot of SMALLER: The TTT (Tiny Tiny Tank) measures a lovely 24 x 16.5 mm.
The TTT is Cartier’s follow-up to the Bagnoire bracelet, which went viral in 2023 and which the Parisian jeweler is still out of stock. I mention bracelets because it shows how quickly trends can change. While many male collectors acknowledged the bracelet’s beauty when it was released, few dared to actually wear it. Even those who do, like the super-stylish Mark Cho, wear it as a bracelet and hide it under their suit sleeves. Now, just a year later, celebrities are proudly wearing the same little watch on the red carpet.
It’s not just mescal that’s making delightful little ripples in the miniature watch trend. Wade showed up at the same event with an equally small pint. Wade takes his watches so seriously that his stylist, Jason Bolden, told me that he cuts the sleeves of his clients’ suits a little shorter to create the basis for his watches. Which makes Wade’s fashion statement last night sound even louder.
