Sisters Kim Kardashian and Kylie Jenner are no strangers to rocking retro fashion. Whether Kim is wearing 1990s Versace on the red carpet or Kylie is wearing a Dolce & Gabbana classic on vacation, the Kardashian-Jenner family are big fans of vintage design. (Following Kardashian’s Marilyn Monroe Met Gala gown in 2022, there’s even a joke going around now that no priceless, rare dress is safe from her credit card deduct.
So at last night’s star-studded Academy Museum Gala, both Kim and Kylie were recreating retro looks, even if it turns out the outfits both stars were wearing were from the same iconic ’90s collection.
This is Mugler’s Spring 1998 Haute Couture collection, an acclaimed show that showcased Thierry Mugler’s masterful corsetry and figure-hugging silhouettes. However, while Kim and Kylie both picked looks from the lineup, each gave them a completely different feel. Kim has worn Mugler on the carpet several times, including at the 2019 Met Gala, where he wore a form-fitting white bustier top paired with a figure-hugging white tunic jacket and nude PVC heels. This isn’t the first time Kim has strapped herself into one of his body-hugging creations, and she famously said: Fashion Met Look 2019: “If I don’t sit down to dinner, now you know why.”

Meanwhile, Kylie opted for a less restrictive style from Mugler — though her perfectly fitted gown was equally style-conscious. A nude bodycon slip dress with a black skirt, structured and clean, feels as modern today as it did in 1998.
Apparently, both sisters were scholars in the Mueller archives. The question is: Do you think they’ll fight over who gets which look? Or do they look through the archives together and each come up with their own wish list? Regardless of the circumstances, they produced another classic moment of victory.
