When we call a shoe “versatile,” we’re usually referring to its chameleon-like adaptability to many activities and/or outfits. But as a newcomer to the shoe world, Commbi is taking it a step further (pun intended). Through its “Build-A-Bear” approach, the Commbi allows wearers to customize the fit and feel to their liking, which is why I had to try it.
My colleagues and I would love to see for ourselves how customized the shoes look*real* Works hard and withstands a full day of wear and tear. It turns out that Combi makes a difference. Please find our full review below.
How Combi works
Commbi currently offers four core shoe styles: stylish Softie Slides ($180), beautiful Patchwork Slides ($150), classic Rhoads Slides ($170) and comfortable Woolie Burro ($180). Once you choose your shoes, you choose your insoles. Each shoe comes with your choice of modular footbed (five in total) that pops in and out of the sole. If you want to switch things up, you can buy extra insoles to mix and match according to the occasion, season, or mood.
Although the outer materials of the insoles vary (cork, shearling, vegan leather, terry-lined memory foam, and flannel-lined memory foam), each insole comes with a layer of memory foam, so no matter which one, you You can enjoy the comfortable comfort experience of your choice. All have grooves that snap into place like pieces of a jigsaw puzzle, so one shoe can quickly turn into multiple shoe options, whether for heavy walking around the house or running errands around town. (You can see three ways a pair of slippers can be worn in the photo below.)
Commbi Shoes: Our Honest Review
Intrigued by the Commi’s “choose your own adventure” model, I chose to test out the black Softie Slides with vegan leather insoles, while my colleague and Well+Good Director of Content Operations Katie Maguire chose the Woolie Burro.
Commbi Footwear Softie — $180.00
size: 5-14 | 5-14 Available colors: 4 | Material: Vegan leather
- roomy toe box

Softies are the slide equivalent of inflatable pillows. They are big and soft and, as the name suggests, very, very soft. The straps are made from smooth vegan leather and are padded with memory foam to cushion the foot without adding friction, while the faux leather footbed provides just the right amount of cushioning. Neither too firm nor too soft to offer support, they have a Goldilocks effect—Just right. I also received terry cloth insoles, which proved to be easy to put into the shoes.
Both footbeds snap seamlessly into place and stay put. However, removing the footbed requires a little more effort—just a quick pull and wiggle. Admittedly, I noticed very little difference between the vegan leather and terry cloth footbeds other than appearance. They’re equally comfortable, but I find I prefer the warm texture of the terry material for its softness and moisture-wicking properties (sweaty foot owners, rejoice!).
I’ve worn these shoes in and around my apartment complex and on quick trips around my neighborhood, and I can confirm they are as comfortable as they look. Unlike many leather (or faux leather) shoes I’ve worn in the past, they didn’t cause blisters or sore spots. They’re too bulky for walks over a mile, but on days when I expect to walk longer distances, I usually prefer sneakers to any other shoe.
Maguire also loved the Woolie Burros she received in forest elf green. “They were made in collaboration with a podiatrist, and I could really tell,” she said. “They’re so soft and have a memory foam insole that makes it feel like you’re walking on clouds.”
They feature a wool felt upper that keeps your feet warm without overheating them. Its slingback design also helps promote air circulation, making it a breeze to put on and take off. They expressed support: “I’m a big house slipper girl and this is the first pair of slippers that really fits me.” Feel Support,” Maguire said. “Due to their comfortable design, these slides may feel a little bulky for people who like a streamlined look, but since I work from home, I like having support throughout the day. They also come with a removable footbed so you can Feel free to customize the look and feel of your slippers…I’m already planning on purchasing a shearling footbed for the winter!
Judgment
Team Well+Good isn’t easily seduced by novelty, but Commi’s modular shoes are more than just cheesy marketing. With a quick-switch footbed, a pair of shoes can be transformed from one style to another (and other), bringing you more benefits. They feel like marshmallows on your feet, which doesn’t hurt. All in all: This shoe is truly greater than the sum of its parts.
