Tokyo, Stockholm, Riviera Maya, Copenhagen – these are just a few of the places I’ve been to so far in 2024. I’ve racked up tons of airline miles (hello, United Gold membership), gotten about five new stamps in my passport, and am so familiar with JFK’s departure terminal that I’m considering whether Want to share a room at the TWA Hotel. In other words, I traveled a lot this year. If there’s one thing I’ve learned along the way, it’s how to pack effectively in a carry-on for any trip, far or near, short or long. It’s all thanks to a few hard-working wardrobe staples.
Whether I’m sitting down to pack my beloved Away Bigger Carry-On luggage for a quick weekend trip or a long international trip, there are a few items in my travel wardrobe that I really can’t live without. (If you’re curious about my flying essentials, I’ve documented them here .) But back to the contents of my actual suitcase. Basic yet versatile tops, pretty and walkable flats, and single accessories are all pieces I pack over and over again. Here, I’ve outlined my 10 easiest items to pack, including some of the outfits I’ve made with them.
1. Reform Dusk Top

This is 100 times chicer than any plain white tank top you can buy, but just as simple. The high neckline looks very elegant and the stretchy fabric makes it very comfortable to wear. I find myself wearing maxi skirts, jeans, and even capri leggings over and over again while traveling.

2. Éterne Francis sweater

I don’t need to outline the reasons why a cashmere sweater should be in your wardrobe, but I do need to bring this perfect cashmere sweater to your attention because it has been my trusty travel companion for years. It’s as thin as air yet surprisingly warm, making it the perfect piece to wear on and off the plane.

3. Levi’s 501 90s jeans

Easy, effortless and classic. For me, it doesn’t get much better than Levi’s 501 ’90s jeans, with a relaxed straight fit, mid-rise and tie fly, they’re the next best thing to true vintage jeans. I usually limit myself to just one pair of jeans per trip because they take up so much space in my luggage, and usually, that’s the perfect pair. And before you ask, yes, they’re even relaxed enough to fly in.

4. Dehanshi Hollyhock Belt

My packaging idea is to rely on classic outfits and embellish them with cool accessories so my outfits don’t look too plain. Dehanche’s Hollyhock belt is the ultimate accessory that takes a simple pair of jeans and a T-shirt to another level.

5. Free People Carrie tube top
Trust me, this is the bandeau that ends it all. I love the softness, stretch and sculptural feel of this product from Free People, aptly called Carrie because of its undeniable late ’90s style. I’ve lost count of how many times I’ve worn it, including three different trips. Needless to say, I will buy this in multiple colors to match everything.

6. White mesh ballet flats

I picked up the hot $25 mesh flats from Target after my co-worker Ana Escalante recommended them to me. They have a memory foam sole so putting them on is a dream. Luckily, similar pairings are everywhere on the web.

7. Paradise Chaos Earrings

When I travel, I have at least two pairs of Heaven Mayhem earrings in my jewelry box, usually a gold pair and a silver pair, so I can choose based on my outfit. Since I mostly prefer simple pieces when traveling, I like to add some fun accessories to my outfits, and these 80s style earrings never let me down.

If you’re looking for a lightweight T-shirt that’s boxy but not too big, the Naadam is perfect.

9. DMY Studios Bibi Sunglasses

I’ve made the mistake of over-wearing sunglasses in the past, thinking that different sunglasses go with different outfits, but then I always opt for these vintage oval sunglasses from DMY Studios. The shape is classic but feels a little different and I always get a compliment or two no matter where I go. I love them so much that I have them in black and brown and will most likely buy them in whatever color they come out next.

10. Light yellow linen midi skirt
The white maxi dress is another piece I end up packing for everything from city adventures to beach vacations because it’s light, airy, and fun to layer. I’ve been wearing this tank top and sandals from Dissh all summer and plan on pairing it with a sweater and boots in the fall.
