In the hype-filled world of modern menswear, low-key collaborations are increasingly rare. But every once in a while, we still get a surprise—and every time no waywe got an absolute haymaker. Well, today is definitely a big day, because J.Crew and Engineered Garments just launched a crazy 13-piece collection that’s almost completely unexpected.
Despite the tight editing, the calling cards of both brands are evident: trademark patchwork, pleats, pockets and patterns all play a big role, as do loose silhouettes and ivy-adjacent details. In fact, nearly every piece manages to amplify what each brand does best without feeling forced or out of place.
Engineered Garments was founded in 2002 by Japanese designer and all-around menswear legend Daiki Suzuki, who at the time was a buyer for Nepenthes, a legendary boutique chain with one in New York City. A particularly stylish outpost. Engineered Garments began as both a love letter to classic American style and an anti-market experiment in modest menswear, but it has since become a name beloved by industry insiders, often for its fabric selections, construction techniques, and depth Cut and stunning.
As you might expect, though, finely crafted clothing isn’t cheap, and it’s not always easy to find. (Never, actually.) Aside from a rogue Uniqlo collaboration here and there, the brand hasn’t really set foot anywhere near a mall. While we wouldn’t consider its J.Crew collaborations to be inherently affordable — a great value oversized military parka starts at $50 but climbs to nearly $700 — most of them are. The price is more affordable than usual.
For this reason (and dozens of others), things are moving fast, so get in while things are going well, or start beating yourself up now.
