Gone are the days when models had to be dressed like a blank canvas to attend various shows. This new crop of models are embracing personal style and expressing themselves through their fashion choices – whether it’s jeans and a T-shirt, or a statement dress. every month, Fashion is diving into the fashion wardrobes of today’s hottest models to see what they’re wearing during castings. This is not a used clothing delivery!
This month, we meet Gavi Kay Stroemer, a model from Sitka, Alaska. After being discovered by her parent company MMG last year, Stromer signed in January and immediately moved to New York City. A native of Nakota Sioux, Stroemer celebrated her first New York Fashion Week appearance this season in a special way – walking for local designer Kayla Lookhorse. The model has continued to walk the catwalk since then, also taking part in the Miami Swim Show and a large Indigenous display at the Getty and Autry Museum earlier this month.
Below, Stromer discusses her discovery story, her favorite assignment so far, and what’s in her closet. (Hint: She has an amazing jewelry collection.)
Fashion: What’s your discovery story?
Garvey Kay Stromer: In December 2023, MMG discovered me through Instagram and signed me in January. But persisting in applying to agencies over the years started my journey to find the right fit for me.
What has been your favorite job so far?
My favorite job was walking for Kayla Lookhorse during New York Fashion Week. This is really important to me; walking for local designers is a powerful and beautiful experience. As a Nakota Sioux who grew up in Tlingit culture in Alaska, I am honored to be able to showcase the beauty of Native heritage in any way I can.
