SecondThe right kind of light therapy, commonly used to treat seasonal affective disorder (SAD), a form of seasonal depression, can also help treat non-seasonal depression, according to a meta-analysis published yesterday. JAMA Psychiatry. Researchers also found that bright light therapy may help people respond more quickly to depression treatments overall.

“Major depression is currently a leading cause of functional impairment and one of the most serious mental health problems,” said the study’s authors, a group of doctors and medical students in Brazil and Argentina. But they also note that the response rate to initial treatment for the condition (or how many people find their symptoms are different after trying their first depression treatment) is Less than 50%2suggesting that alternative or additional treatments (such as bright light therapy) are necessary.

So, how does bright light therapy improve depression?

Researchers analyzed data from randomized clinical trials that looked at the effects of bright light therapy in people with non-seasonal depression. Their findings suggest that bright light therapy can be an effective tool if added to, rather than in place of, traditional depression treatments. Overall, 40 percent of people who received bright light therapy responded to the treatment, compared with 23 percent of those who didn’t receive the treatment.

The study authors said this shows that bright light therapy is a useful addition to the treatment of depression and may also speed up treatment response.

According to the Mayo Clinic, SAD lamps (also called light boxes) emit about 10,000 lux of intense light, mimicking outdoor light. This bright light exposure may cause chemical changes in the brain that increase serotonin levels, thereby improving mood and reducing fatigue.

According to the Mayo Clinic, SAD lamps are most effective when used for up to 30 minutes within an hour of waking up. The light is about 16 to 24 inches from your face, and you should keep your eyes open and not look directly at the light. You can buy it without a prescription, but it’s a good idea to let your healthcare provider know you’re trying bright light therapy and follow any guidance they may provide.

It is also important to emphasize here that bright light therapy or SAD lamps have been found to be helpful together with Other treatments for depression, so you should not stop other forms of treatment without first consulting your healthcare provider.

    Buy the best SAD lamps

SAD lamps or light boxes are available in a variety of prices and sizes. The Mayo Clinic recommends looking for a lamp specifically designed to treat SAD that emits at least 10,000 lux of light with as little UV rays as possible. Beyond that, look for lights that suit your style and space.
